The Plextor MSP solid-state drive uses MLC technology coupled with a Marvell controller. Marvell controllers are common in SSDs and are superior in many ways to other controllers. They are capable of superior read/write speeds and deal well with both compressed and uncompressed files. The Plextor MSP has a form factor of 2.5 inches, but it comes with a 3.5-inch mounting kit, making it easy to install on your machine. This drive is also lightweight, weighing in at just 70 grams.
This solid-state drive is fast, with sequential read speeds up to 540 MBps and sequential write speeds up to 470 MBps. Random write times on this device were as quick as 88,000 input operations per second, or IOPS. We were impressed by the Plextor MSP’s speed, including its 0.1-ms seek time ??? common in solid-state drives.
The Plextor MSP consumes very little power while in use and offers shock resistance up to 1500 G. This device also has a life expectancy of 2.4 million hours, which is the highest among the solid-state drives we reviewed.
This SSD comes in available capacities of 128, 256 and 512GB. We would have liked to see a smaller option available from Plextor, as you may wish to use the solid-state drive primarily to boot your OS. An option of 90GB or lower would allow for that possibility, but sadly, this is lacking with the Plextor MSP. The 512GB option is nice if you plan to use the SSD as both a boot and storage drive.
Plextor offers a variety of help and support options. If you need to speak to someone immediately, you can call, email or initiate a live chat on Plextor’s website. You can also look through a helpful FAQs section and community forum, as well as an online manual that contains helpful materials for newcomers and tech enthusiasts alike. There are also firmware updates available on the Plextor website.
The Plextor MSP features competitive technical specs and a lightweight design that make it appealing for those looking to purchase one of the best solid-state drives. It offers competitive read and write speeds along with a Marvell controller and MLC flash components that make it fast and effective. The Plextor MSP is a good choice for a solid-state drive.
